I’m currently using the Sephora Purifying Brush Shampoo to clean my brushes. It’s just given to me so I really didn’t have an idea how costly purifying brush shampoos are. So imagine my surprise when I found out that a 2 oz. bottle costs $6.
I’ve read good reviews about the Sephora Purifying Brush Shampoo, some emphasizing on how quickly it removes the build-up from makeup brushes or how it conditions the bristles. Some reviews even compare it to other brands.
I can’t really compare the Sephora Purifying Brush Shampoo with other brands available in the market because it is the only makeup brush shampoo I’ve tried. But I can say that it does the job of cleaning my makeup brushes– makes my brushes clean and fresh-smelling.
If you do not want to spend money on expensive makeup brush shampoo, you can use baby shampoo or purifying shampoo to clean your makeup brushes. You can even use an antibacterial dishwashing liquid because it does the job just as well. :-)
The key to preserving the life of your makeup brushes is in how you care for them. Below are some tips on how to wash and care for your makeup brushes from Marie Claire.
1. Wash your brushes at least once a week as dirty brushes are breeding grounds for bacteria that can give all sorts of skin irritations.
2. Use a small amount of cleansing agent to clean, gently swirl your brushes in them to remove any traces of makeup.
3. Use lukewarm water to wash your brushes and then running water for rinsing.
4. Never soak your brushes as this can affect the adhesive that keeps the bristles in place. Soaking your brushes causes shedding.
5. Once brushes are clean, squeeze any excess water gently (you can use lint-free tissue) and reshape brushes using your fingers.
6. When drying brushes, leave them on a flat surface to dry naturally (never upright as this may affect the way bristles fall).
7. Never apply heat to dry brushes to dry the brushes, esp. those with wooden handles, as the heat will eventually cause the handles to wobble around.

Bongga! I also love my own brush shampoo, but would also like to try out other brands.
Taking care of brushes is really important if you don’t want to have an irritated skin.
What brand are you using? ELF?
